Action required: Surveys into discrimination, bullying and sexual harassmentThe College's Expert Advisory Group (EAG) on discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in the practice of surgery has launched the campaign to reveal the extent of this and find ways of stopping it.

The campaign involves an independent prevalence survey (quantitative research), a pathway for individuals to share their experiences (qualitative research) and in June, publication of an Issues Paper, supported by wider consultation and options for submissions.

You will have received an email from Best Practice Australia, the independent research agency managing the quantitative research.

I urge you to take the time to complete the prevalence survey, so the data about the extent of these problems is accurate and up to date. Only with your help can we make sure our advice to the College is evidence-based.

The EAG has also set up a confidential pathway for the qualitative survey, to hear from individuals willing to share their experience of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment, so we can better understand the problem and can recommend ways to stop it.

You can - identified or confidentially - tell your story by telephone, Skype or if needed, face-to-face interview with a qualified and independent researcher, or complete an online questionnaire accessible here.

Independent research agency, Converge International, will collect and thematically analyse these personal stories and experiences to inform the work of the EAG.

If you want to share your story of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in the practice of surgery, you can register by emailing personalexperience@convergeintl.com.au or by telephone:
  • Australian states and territories except Western Australia: call 1300 687 327 from 9am - 4pm local time
  • Western Australia: call 1300 687 327 from 9am - 3pm local time
  • New Zealand: phone 0800 666 367 from 11am-6pm local time
To help with the booking process, when you request an interview by email, please include your name, location, contact details and some preferred times for the interview. You will receive a return email letting you know the name of the person you will speak with and the time of the interview.

If you have experienced problems with discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment or for another reason think support would be helpful, I encourage you to access the Surgeon Support Program at 1300 687 327 (Aus) or 0800 666 367 (NZ).
