SUBJECTIVE TINNITUS

UNDERSTANDING, ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT.

INITIAL ROLE OF THE ENT SURGEON (OR OTHER FRONT-LINE CLINICIAN).

The ENT surgeon or other front-line clinician has the opportunity to allay anxiety and provide strategies which meet the needs of a majority of patients presenting because of tinnitus. Doing so allows clinics and clinicians with specialised expertise to focus their resources on those patients for whom their tinnitus is intolerably intrusive.

The ability of ENT surgeons to help patients troubled by subjective tinnitus is often constrained by the limited time available. After offering a simple understanding of tinnitus this website suggests a protocol for assessment and management supported by information sheets. This "package of care" is aimed to keep the duration of the consultation modest while increasing its helpfulness for patients with tinnitus.
